Which Construction adhesive to use

Which Construction adhesive to use

Construction adhesives are designed to provide high-strength bonding across a wide range of building materials, often removing the need for mechanical fixings such as nails or screws. With solvent-based, solvent-free, hybrid and polyurethane options available, choosing the right adhesive depends on the project requirements, substrates and working conditions.

Understanding how each type performs will help you select the most effective solution for your application.

What you’ll need

Construction adhesive suitable for your project, applicator gun, clean cloth, safety gloves, appropriate surface cleaner.

Adhesive types explained

  • Water-based construction adhesives
Best suited to internal projects where low odour and low VOC performance are required. These adhesives are easy to clean up with water but require at least one porous surface to cure properly. They typically have a slower drying time but deliver strong final bond strength once fully cured.
  • Hybrid polymer adhesives
A safer alternative to traditional solvent-based products, hybrid adhesives offer low VOC emissions and minimal odour. They provide excellent flexibility, making them ideal for areas subject to movement or vibration. Suitable for both internal and external use, hybrids can be applied in damp or cold conditions and offer good UV resistance.
  • Solvent-based construction adhesives
Ideal where an instant strong grab is required. These high-tack adhesives bond quickly and are suitable for non-porous materials such as metal. Their gap-filling properties make them effective for uneven surfaces, and their high initial grab prevents slippage on vertical applications.
  • Polyurethane construction adhesives
Designed for heavy-duty and load-bearing applications, polyurethane adhesives offer superior bond strength and excellent gap-filling capability. They perform well on uneven substrates and provide strong resistance to water, weather and temperature changes, making them suitable for internal and external use.

Key considerations when choosing an adhesive

  • Temperature
For cold or winter conditions, choose polyurethane or hybrid adhesives, as some solvent-based products may fail below +5°C.
  • Substrate type
For uneven or porous surfaces such as wood to brick, use a high-grab or gap-filling adhesive to ensure full contact.
  • Load requirements
For heavy or structural applications, select a heavy-duty polyurethane adhesive designed for load-bearing use.
  • Initial grab
High-grab adhesives are ideal for vertical installations, helping to prevent materials from slipping before curing.
  • Environmental resistance
For exterior projects, ensure the adhesive is waterproof and UV-resistant to maintain long-term performance.
  • Safety and VOC levels
Hybrid polymer adhesives offer lower odour and reduced solvent content, making them safer for enclosed or occupied spaces.

Key tips

Always check the manufacturer’s application temperature guidelines before use.
Ensure surfaces are clean, dry and free from dust or grease.
Select the adhesive based on both the materials being bonded and the conditions on site.
Allow full curing time before loading or stressing the bond.
