Brush-in jointing compounds are a fast, reliable alternative to traditional sand and cement mortars. These ready-mixed, resin-based materials are swept into paving joints to create a durable, flexible and weed-resistant finish, suitable for patios, paths and driveways in a wide range of weather conditions.
What you’ll need
Brush-in jointing compound, long-handled broom, hose with spray nozzle, pointing tool, gloves.
1. Preparation
- Thoroughly clean the paving area, removing dirt, debris and any loose or old jointing material.
- Pre-soak the entire surface with clean water, especially on porous stone, to prevent staining and help the compound flow into the joints.
2. Application
- Open the container and pour a small amount of compound onto the wet paving.
- Use a broom to sweep the material diagonally across the joints, working in manageable sections.
- Keep the surface continuously wet during application to aid movement and prevent residue sticking to the slabs.
3. Compacting & finishing
- Use a pointing tool to compact the compound firmly into the joints.
- Top up as required, ensuring joints are filled to within 1–2mm of the paving surface.
- Lightly rinse the surface and brush away any remaining particles as the compound begins to cure.
Key tips
- Ensure joints meet the minimum width and depth specified on the product label (typically 3–5mm wide and 20–25mm deep).
- Always keep paving wet during application, particularly in warm or windy conditions.
- Although brush-in, compacting joints improves strength and long-term durability.
- Light foot traffic is usually possible after 24 hours, with full cure in up to 72 hours depending on weather.
