Sealing driveways and patios helps protect paving from stains, moisture and weather damage while enhancing the overall finish. Although sealing isn’t always essential, it is highly recommended for natural stone and exposed paving to prevent premature ageing and make ongoing maintenance easier.
Exterior paving sealers create a protective barrier against water ingress, organic growth and everyday wear. Depending on the product chosen, sealers can either enhance the natural colour of the stone or leave a subtle, invisible finish. Most sealed surfaces remain protected for 1–2 years.
What you’ll need
- Pressure washer or stiff broom
Patio cleaner or fungicidal wash (if required)
Low-pressure sprayer or roller and tray
Soft-bristled broom
100mm paintbrush for edges
Protective gloves, goggles and mask
1. Preparation
- Sweep the area to remove loose dirt, debris and weeds from joints.
- Clean the surface thoroughly using a pressure washer and suitable cleaner. Take care on softer stone to avoid marking.
- For new paving, wait 8–12 weeks before sealing to allow efflorescence to disperse naturally.
- Ensure the surface is completely clean and fully dry before application.
2. Application
- Apply the sealer evenly using a low-pressure sprayer, roller or brush, working in small sections.
- Pour the sealer into a tray and roll directly onto the slabs, avoiding excessive application into joints.
- Apply a second coat while the first is still slightly damp for best penetration.
- Invisible sealers usually require one coat.
Colour-enhancing sealers can be built up:
One coat for a subtle matt enhancement.
Two coats for a gloss finish.
Three coats for a wet-look effect.
3. Curing
- Allow at least 24 hours before light foot traffic.
- Avoid heavy use for up to 7 days to allow full curing and maximum protection.
Key tips
- Decide on the finish before starting – invisible or colour-enhancing.
- Do not allow coats to fully dry between applications, as this can prevent penetration and cause surface tackiness.
- Each additional coat typically requires half the amount of sealer used previously.
- Always test on a small, hidden area before full application.
- Apply only in dry, mild conditions and re-seal every 1–2 years for ongoing protection.
