How to use waterproof wood adhesive

How to use waterproof wood adhesive

Waterproof wood adhesive creates a strong, durable bond for timber joints, making it ideal for interior and exterior projects where moisture, heat or movement may be present.

What you’ll need

Waterproof wood adhesive, applicator nozzle or brush, clamps or weights, clean cloth, sandpaper

1.Preparation

  • Ensure timber surfaces are clean, dry and free from dust, grease or loose fibres.
  • Lightly sand smooth surfaces to improve adhesion and wipe away any dust.
  • Dry-fit components to check alignment before bonding.

2. Application

  • Apply an even layer of wood adhesive to one surface only.
  • Bring the pieces together immediately and press firmly into position.
  • Clamp or weight the joint to maintain pressure while the adhesive cures.
  • Wipe away any excess adhesive with a damp cloth before it dries.

2. Finishing

  • Allow the adhesive to cure fully before removing clamps.
  • Once cured, the joint can be sanded, painted or finished as required.

Key tips

  • Use a waterproof (D4-rated) wood adhesive for areas exposed to moisture or humidity.
  • Apply steady clamping pressure across the full joint to achieve maximum bond strength.
  • Avoid moving or stressing the joint until the adhesive has fully cured.
  • Store adhesive sealed and in a cool, dry place after use.
