Bitumen black paint provides a tough, waterproof coating for protecting surfaces exposed to moisture, weather and corrosion.
What you’ll need
Bitumen black paint, paint brush or roller, broom or stiff brush, scraper, protective gloves and eye protection.
1. Preparation
- Remove dirt, dust, grease, algae and loose material using a brush or scraper.
- Wire brush metal surfaces to remove rust and loose corrosion.
- Ensure surfaces are dry and sound before application. Prime bare metal if required.
2. Application
- Stir the bitumen paint thoroughly before use.
- Apply in thin, even coats using a brush or roller.
- Allow the first coat to dry fully before applying a second coat at right angles for full coverage.
3. Curing & finishing
- Allow the coating to dry completely before exposure to water.
- Apply additional coats where higher protection is required.
- Clean tools immediately after use with white spirit or paraffin.
Key tips
- Do not thin unless necessary; bitumen coatings are usually ready to use.
- Apply in dry conditions between 5°C and 30°C.
- Use thin layers rather than one thick coat for best results.
- Suitable for use alongside bitumen sealant or bituminous mastic on roofing and flashing details.
