Good preparation is key to achieving a long-lasting tiled floor. Taking time to prepare the surface, plan the layout and use the correct tools will help ensure a professional finish.
What you’ll need
Notched trowel, tiles, spacers, spirit level, bucket, mixing drill, sponge, tape measure, tile cutter, grouting float, rubber mallet and clean water.
1. Preparation & planning
Prepare the surface: Ensure the floor is clean, level and solid. Remove loose material and repair low spots using a self-levelling compound. For wooden sub-floors, install cement backer boards.
Prime: Apply a suitable tile primer to seal the surface and improve adhesion.
Plan the layout: Mark the centre of the room and dry-lay tiles to plan cuts, avoiding small slivers at edges.
2. Tiling
Mix adhesive: Mix cement-based adhesive with water to a smooth, lump-free consistency.
Apply adhesive: Using a notched trowel at a 45° angle, comb adhesive onto the floor in sections of around 1m². Press tiles firmly into place with a slight twist.
Large tiles: Butter the back of large format or deep-studded tiles to improve adhesion.
Check levels: Use spacers, check with a spirit level and tap down high spots using a rubber mallet.
Clean as you go: Remove excess adhesive with a damp sponge.
3. Grouting & finishing
Allow adhesive to cure: Follow drying times on packaging.
Grout joints: Apply grout using a rubber float, forcing it into joints. Wipe tiles clean with a damp sponge.
Remove haze: After 15–20 minutes, wipe away grout haze.
Final drying: Leave the floor to dry fully (around 72 hours) before heavy use.
Key tips
Comb adhesive in one direction to release air.
Avoid swirling with the trowel.
Work in small sections to prevent drying.
Use the correct notch size for tile size.
