How to make a silicone sealant joint

How to make a silicone sealant joint

Applying silicone sealant correctly creates a clean, watertight finish around kitchens, bathrooms and fittings.

What you’ll need

Silicone sealant, caulking gun, masking tape, smoothing tool or gloved finger, cleaning wipes, utility knife.

1. Preparation

  • Remove all old sealant before applying new silicone.

  • Clean and dry the joint thoroughly.

  • Apply masking tape along both sides of the joint if required.

  • Cut the nozzle at a 45° angle and load into the gun.

2. Application

  • Apply a steady bead of silicone at a 45° angle, ensuring the joint is fully filled.

  • Work smoothly and consistently along the joint.

3. Finishing

  • Smooth immediately using a damp finger or smoothing tool.

  • Remove masking tape before the sealant skins.

  • Allow to cure fully (typically 24–48 hours) before exposure to water.

Key tips

  • Use the correct sealant for the application.

  • Ensure surfaces are completely dry.

  • Work in short sections for best results.
