Applying silicone sealant correctly creates a clean, watertight finish around kitchens, bathrooms and fittings.
What you’ll need
Silicone sealant, caulking gun, masking tape, smoothing tool or gloved finger, cleaning wipes, utility knife.
1. Preparation
Remove all old sealant before applying new silicone.
Clean and dry the joint thoroughly.
Apply masking tape along both sides of the joint if required.
Cut the nozzle at a 45° angle and load into the gun.
2. Application
Apply a steady bead of silicone at a 45° angle, ensuring the joint is fully filled.
Work smoothly and consistently along the joint.
3. Finishing
Smooth immediately using a damp finger or smoothing tool.
Remove masking tape before the sealant skins.
Allow to cure fully (typically 24–48 hours) before exposure to water.
Key tips
Use the correct sealant for the application.
Ensure surfaces are completely dry.
Work in short sections for best results.
