Filling cracks with sealants

Filling cracks with sealants

Paintable caulk is ideal for repairing hairline and moving cracks, providing a flexible, paint-ready finish.

What you’ll need

Paintable acrylic or latex caulk, caulking gun, scraper, damp cloth or sponge.

1. Preparation

  • Remove loose paint and debris and widen cracks slightly to a V-shape.

  • Clean and dust-free the area.

  • Cut the nozzle at a 45° angle.

2. Application

  • Apply a continuous bead of caulk, forcing it into the crack.

  • Smooth within five minutes using a damp finger or cloth.

3. Finishing

  • Wipe away excess before it dries.

  • Allow to dry fully (typically 1–2 hours) before painting.

Key tips

  • Use mesh tape for deeper cracks.

  • Apply in layers for cracks deeper than 10mm.

  • Avoid tooling once skinning begins.
