The challenge

This newly laid porcelain patio required jointing during winter conditions, with night-time and early morning temperatures close to freezing.

Although the porcelain slabs were 20mm thick, migration of bedding material and primer during installation reduced joint depths to approximately 15–18mm. This ruled out the use of alternative polymeric jointing compounds, which typically require a minimum joint depth of 20–25mm and cannot be applied in temperatures below 3°C.

Traditional mortar-based or cementitious jointing products were also unsuitable due to temperature sensitivity, extended curing times, and the risk of staining, residue and costly clean-up.

Why Bond It

Geo-Fix All Weather Jointing Compound was specified as it can be applied in shallow joints, performs reliably in cold conditions, and delivers a permanent, frost-resistant finish.

The graphite colour was selected to complement the porcelain paving, maintaining a clean, contemporary appearance without compromising durability.

Application on site

Five 14kg buckets of Geo-Fix All Weather Graphite were used. The paving was thoroughly cleaned and dampened before the compound was brushed into the joints.

The material was compacted and refilled as required, then finished using a pointing tool to achieve a smooth, consistent joint. The entire jointing process was completed efficiently with no mess, staining or residue.
